Vision of the holistic energy transition

microbEnergy develops innovative solutions and safe implementations for the challenges of the energy transition.

microbEnergy - Our energy is green.

Our goal is the energy transition. To stop climate change, decarbonisation of all sectors is necessary. Technologies are emerging that save carbon dioxide for electricity, heat and mobility on a large scale. Complete decarbonisation of the sectors is not possible in purely electric terms. That is why we are focusing on producing green synthetic fuels such as hydrogen or methane and bringing them into practical use. This brings the power-to-gas technology, which is already available today, further into focus, as it enables the conversion of electricity into storable forms of energy.

As a pioneer in the industry, microbEnergy developed the key BiON® process for biological methanation. Microorganisms convert hydrogen and carbon dioxide into methane. The resulting synthetic natural gas (CNG, green gas) is indistinguishable from fossil natural gas and can be fed into the existing gas grid.

After testing and optimising the process in the in-house technical centre, microbEnergy brought the process to market maturity. In 2015, the world's first practical power-to-gas plant with biological methanation went into operation. In 2019, microbEnergy transfers the technology to industrial scale. The planning and subsequent plant construction is carried out by the sister company Schmack Biogas GmbH. Since October 2021, microbEnergy is part of Hitachi Zosen Inova AG.

Power-to-gas is one module in the overall context of the energy transition. That is why microbEnergy is conducting feasibility studies to examine possibilities for sensible coupling of the electricity, heat and mobility sectors. We focus on the further development of existing sites. Especially by linking biogas plants or sewage treatment plants with power-to-gas, new business models can emerge that ensure not only a CO2-free electricity supply but also a fossil-free heat supply.
